OT victory

JACKSON TWP — The
Seneca Valley girls
lacrosse team was on
the verge of seeing
another WPIAL
semifinals
appearance slip
away.
The Raiders
responded just in
time when, facing an
8-7 deficit with
less than two
minutes remaining in
regulation, Berta
Miller scored with
1:34 left to tie
Quaker Valley at 8.
The Raiders then
played staunch
defense and got
overtime goals from
Lindsay Flavion and
Adrienne Steele in a
10-9 win over the
Quakers Thursday
night at NexTier
Stadium.
The win sends SV
(14-5) to the
semifinals for the
first time, where it
will face Mount
Lebanon (13-4) at
7:30 p.m. Tuesday at
North Hills.
The Raiders saw
their season come to
an end in the
quarterfinals each
of the last two
seasons, including a
loss to Quaker
Valley last year.
"It feels good,"
said first-year SV
coach Dina Hughes.
"The girls have
worked hard for it.
"Their goals were to
win the section this
year, but they also
wanted to show the
rest of the WPIAL
the talent that they
have."
The Raiders trailed
the Quakers 4-3 at
halftime. QV
extended the deficit
to 5-3 when Emily
Dando scored 38
seconds into the
second half.
But SV came back to
tie the game when
Flavion and Amy
Cross tallied goals
26 seconds apart.
The same duo struck
again, scoring at
18:08 and 16:42,
respectively, to put
the Raiders up 7-5.
That's when the
Quakers took control
with three
unanswered goals and
led 8-7 late in the
game.
The Raiders made
several pushes into
QV territory, but
came away with no
goals before Miller
scored the
equalizer.
In the five-minute
break before
overtime play began,
Hughes kept things
simple for her team.
"I just wanted to
keep their
confidence up, told
them to make smart
decisions with their
passes," she said.
Flavion opened the
overtime, which
consisted of two
three-minute
periods, with a goal
at 2:12.
Quaker Valley's Bess
Ruzich tied the game
1:24 later.
Steele's tally was
the deciding score,
with Shannon Quail
turning in a fine
defensive effort to
thwart the Quakers'
last offensive push
with 15 seconds
left.
The Quakers (13-8)
defeated the Raiders
10-6 earlier this
season.
"They didn't do
anything differently
tonight, from what I
could see," said QV
coach Jessica
Garavaglia of the
Raiders. "They just
executed better and
were the better
team."
Quakers goalie
Danielle Lindsey
recorded six saves
while Katy Sterling
had a strong game
with 14 saves for
the Raiders.
"Katy did a great
job," said Hughes.
"She's a leader on
the defense and
constantly talks
with the defenders."
Flavion's overtime
score gave her 111
goals for her career
and tied her with
2006 graduate Erin
Bernhard for the
most in program
history.
Following is the
scoring breakdown
for the Raiders in
Thursday's win:
Lindsay Flavion (4),
Amy Cross (3),
Shannon Quail, Berta
Miller and Adrienne
Steele.
