Raiders rip NA for 18-9 victory

JACKSON TWP — North Allegheny scored first, but the Tigers' lead was a brief one.
Following a goal by NA's Talia Waskowicz just 30 seconds into the game, the Seneca Valley girls lacrosse team scored the next six goals on its way to an 18-9 win Wednesday.
Lindsay Flavion got the Raiders on the board with a goal with 23:17 left in the first half.
Goals by Adrienne Steele, Amy Cross, Flavion again, Berta Miller and Nicole Roche gave SV a 6-1 lead it would never relinquish.
"I think our passes at midfield were key," said Raiders coach Dina Hughes. "Our transition game was working well."
NA goalkeeper Nia Parillo was hit with a barrage of shots in the first half. She made nine saves in that span, but also gave up eight goals by halftime.
She wasn't helped by her team's offense, which failed to sustain possessions in the attack zone in the first 25 minutes.
"It was just a case of Seneca Valley controlling the ball," said NA assistant coach Chris Omasits. "They did a good job of that."
Flavion led the Raiders (9-3, 6-0) with five goals, including three in the second half.
Steele and Mallory Dailey each scored three times and two goals apiece went to Miller and Andrea St. Clair.
Roche, Cross and Melissa Ball all found the net once in the win, with Ball scoring in the closing moments of the first half, which gave SV an 8-2 edge at intermission.
"There may be one or two players who have scored a couple more goals than the rest, but our offense has been balanced the whole season," said Hughes.
The Raiders scored three goals in the first 3:48 of the second half for an 11-3 lead, and Parillo, a freshman, was replaced by Angie Florentine, who ended with three saves.
Trailing 14-3 with 14 minutes left in the game, NA's offense came to life by scoring four unanswered goals, two of them by Emma Luitgaarden.
But Flavion's fourth goal of the game at 5:33 stopped the Tigers' run and gave SV a 15-7 lead.
Omasits hopes his team's spurt on offense is a sign of things to come.
"We're a very young team," he said. "We start one senior. We scored a few goals in a row and we just had the right mix of players in there."
SV's Katy Sterling made seven saves in the win.
Also scoring for North Allegheny (5-9, 2-4) were Amber Wetzel (twice), Meredith Gumash, Claire Pilarski, Brenna Curti and Lexi Yurcon.
The Raiders play at North Hills today.
